Folks I just got some disturbing news that a gunmen is in Volunteer High School and they are unable to locate the person. The area hospitals are on alert, and a friend who works there is who notified me. Lets hope this is a false alarm, but please pray for their safety if this is in deed the case.

Several Hawkins County Schools are locked down today after school officials got word a student was coming to Volunteer High School with a gun.

Hawkins County School official Steve Starnes told News Channel 11 that no students are in danger, and the decision was simply a precaution.

Starnes said school officials got word a student was taking a gun to Volunteer High School in Church Hill, Tennessee. The decision to lock down the building came at the request of the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department, Starnes said.

No one can come or go from Volunteer High School until further notice.
The student isn't inside the school, so neighborning schools including Surgoinsville Elementary and Middle, Rogersville Middle School and the Alternative School, and Joseph Rogers Primary also have been locked down.

Deputies are looking for the student right now.

Report of armed student leads to lockdown of Hawkins County schools; parents at Volunteer High allowed to take children home

Police say students are safe from another student who allegedly threatened to bring a gun to Volunteer High School, and was reported spotted nearby this morning.

Wednesday night the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department received a missing person's report on a 15-year-old Hawkins County student, formerly of Volunteer High School but now assigned to the alternative school. That student had allegedly threatened to return to Volunteer today with a gun, and was spotted near the school this morning with five other students.

The other five students were apprehended by police, and say the 15-year-old who allegedly made threats did not have a weapon.

After reports of a lockdown at Volunteer, a number of parents went to the school wanting to take their children home. Law enforcement initially said the children are safer in school. They are now allowing parents who come to campus to sign a sheet and leave with their child.

While Hawkins County School officials say the students are in no danger, they have expanded the lockdown to the entire school system as a precaution. There is also a large police presence at Volunteer High School.

In addition to the Hawkins County Sheriff's department, police from Church Hill and the Kingsport K-9 unit are participating in the search for the 15-year-old, focusing in woods around the Cedar Hills neighborhood.
